Introduction

Patients will not be committed unless they are convinced that:

They have foot problem
Its consequences are serious
It can be treated effectively
The advantages of treatment outweigh the disadvantages.
Patient education is the master key to foot ulcer prevention.

Background

People with diabetes are prone to foot problems as diabetes causes damage to blood vessels and nerves. This, in turn results in a decreased ability to sense trauma or pressure on the foot and a foot injury may go unnoticed until severe infection develops. Small infections can rapidly progress to death of the skin and other tissues(necrosis) which may require amputation of the affected limb to save the patient’s life. Foot problems can be prevented in part with improved blood sugar control and part with custom made medically proven footwear.

Diabetics at high risk for developing foot problems include those with diabetes for more than 10 years, those with poor glucose control, those with eye, kidney and heart complication. All diabetic should get regular (at least twice a year) foot exams by their health care provider to diagnose if they have nerve damage.

DIABETES FOOTWEAR MARKET

The Current market for footwear for diabetics has products manufactured out of MCR, or what is called Micro Cellular Rubber. This material was traditionally invented for people with leprosy and has a lot of inherent disadvantages when used for daibetics. MCR loses its shape and becomes hard with usage. It is very prone to microbial contamination. Traditional protection aganist microbial contamination involves extensive cleaning procedures, which are costly and time consuming. What’s more, those procedures do not offer residual protection against further contamination.

The Suggested alternative to MCR is footwear made of a material dual layer which is ideally suited for diabetics:

This material is soft enough to relieve the patients of their pain. It is of particular importance in specialist shoes for diabetic, where it offers superb protection aganist pressure points.

It is breathable and redistributes the foot pressure evenly and is not prone to microbial contamination.

The dual layer of different material consists of resilient shock absorbing base.
It has a slower rebound helping ulcers and wounds to heal.
